Leon Hirsch Keyserling was born on January 22, 1908 in Charleston, South Carolina. He received his A.B. degree from Columbia University in 1928 and in 1931 he received his LL.B. from Harvard University. From 1931 to 1933 he was a graduate student in the Department of Economics at Columbia University. In 1933 he began work as an attorney for the Agricultural Adjustment Administration.
